recovery console "unknown error"

Ok so your hard drive got corrupted etc. so you put it aside until you could deal with it. You book a bar appointment and the blue shirt realizes a wipe and reinstall of the OS X will fix your mac he powers off the mac and reboots holding command plus R and gets to the restore partition of your hard drive ...so far so good.

He uses disk utility to wipe your hard drive , then closes it and throws you on the store Wifi and clicks reinstall OS X and it fails " unknown error"....oh boy this is going to be expensive , your politely told its the logic board and for a flat fee of 475 or 600.00 your out of warranty mac can be repaired good as new.

Here is the problem it is your logic board kind of , reloading your OS X requires logging into a server , if your system clock is wrong the server won't let you on ...sadly the console has no built in prompt to identify the issue so it comes back "unknown error" .....you can fix this issue in about three minutes free.

From restore menu top left icons click utilities then terminal  and type date , most likely you will see December 2001 etc. clearly not right , here is the command line to fix the issue using the correct date and time in the following pattern , first two digits month second two digits date and next four time and last four year.

date 051208022017

Hit enter and retype date , your system clock is now right , close terminal and click reinstall OS X and voila you can now reinstall OS X .....yeah it was your logic board but paying 475-600 to reset your system clock is a wee extreme for us .

Its definitely the logic board

Upgrade/ replace ?

Ok so your in that shiny place with wood tables and you can't help but drool over the new goodness....your Mac is 3-5 years old or older and you can make a cup of coffee in the time it takes to boot.....you so want your Mac to boot up and shutdown in lighting speed.

Don't reach for your wallet and peel out a grand or more for a new laptop...your old mac can be just as fast if not faster then a new one, SSD ( solid state drives) are dirt cheap at the moment and they use the same tech the new Macs do, throw one in your old Mac and upgrade your ram and presto you have the fast mac you wanted at a fraction of the cost.

new is nice but your old Mac can be your best friend again and its green to repurpose the tech and not landfill it quite yet  :)

We can help you ...no really we can help you

If your reading this chances are something really bad has happened to your computer and a 19 year old in a blueberry shirt has told you its going to cost a lot to fix your Baby, You shuffle out of the gleaming showroom dejected , your lost confused and combing the internet on your smart phone trying to find someone , anyone to tell you it can be done cheaper.....thats why your here.

I will let you in on a little secret that number they gave you is based on nothing more then making a new one look a whole lot better of a deal. We think thats the wrong way to do business , call us optimistic we assume best case scenario and work from there . On average we repair liquid spill 13 inch Pro's for 260.00 and 15's for 315.00, where do we get our numbers from ?, read on.

Apple offers and excellent program called depot repair wherein your Mac can be shipped to a third party repairer and everything fixed for a flat rate of 260.00 for a 13 Inch Macbook Pro and 315.00 for a 15 Inch Macbook Pro.....but there is a catch to this program , your mac has to be minty , no physical or liquid damage period, so essentially unless you live in a bubble and it just stopped working thats not what your paying ( essentially any real world likely scenario wherein it breaks), if they find any such damage you get requoted 805.00 to 1100.00.  We think thats messed up so if your Mac can be fixed your not paying more then 260.00 or 315.00 period.

Buy a new or used Mac?

Ok  you either have a Mac thats getting along in age or your looking to get into Mac's you go to nearest Apple Store and see the cheapest Mac they have is 1k and up, you don't have that kind of money ?, that's ok you don't need it.

We will use the 13 inch Macbook pro for example 2.5 core i5 4 gigs of ram and a 500 HD, its 1100.00 at Apple, its a nice piece of tech ......but it's got a standard hard drive , weak ram and it's just a dual core. Going out on a limb here but if your reading this then chances are you don't have a grand for a thunderbolt monitor so having a thunderbolt port really doesn't mean much to you.

A 2009-2010 13 inch pro in good condition can be had from 350-500, Solid state drives are dirt cheap these days and a 240 gig SSD is going to run you 100 buck, bumping the Mac to 8gb 1066 ram probably 70.00. Assuming you bought a 2009 for 350.00 add your drive for 100 and ram 70 you have a Mac faster then the base pro by a huuuuuuge margin and you only spent 520.00 or about 50% of buying new and you have a dedicated video card which the new one doesn't , thats a pretty good deal.

Aside from having to buy the Mac if you currently have a pro and are debating upgrading or buying new the same rules apply more ram and a solid state drive will give you great performance bumps for way less then buying new.....but those retina pro's are so nice , take some of the money you saved and buy a sweet monitor and plug your mac via mini port to it and use it to get near or better image quality , shop smart peep's newer and more expensive often isn't the way to go.
